Things I’ve been thinking about

I’ve recently finished reading The Re-Enchantment of Art by Suzi Gablik, a personal manifesto against the continued effects of modernism in art with its patriarchal hierarchy and complete lack of meaning for the viewer. Gablik suggests a move towards a more meaningful art which embraces community, nature and positivity – its a really refreshing read and has made me engage much more with the potential for art today. I was particularly interested in two artists work mentioned by Gablik, Lynne Hull who makes work to support animals such as her Raptor Roosts and Mierle Laderman Ukeles who did an amazing project in which she personally met and thanked all of New York City’s garbage collectors over a period of two years. Inspiring stuff, and nothing I was ever told about at art college.
