The Joy of Discovery

ImageIt is always satisfying to discover new artists that inspire you. I came across this painting by little known Dutch painter Jan Mankes (1889 – 1920) on a postcard, I loved it for its fantastic sense of design and subtle use of colour and mark. I’ve since spent some time browsing the official Jan Mankes website which has a great online catalogue of his work. I was delighted to discover that Mankes was also a printmaker – have a look at this brilliant Guinea Fowl wood engraving:

Mankes was also a fantastic draughtsman:

Alongside his intriguing depictions of birds, Mankes also made paintings of people and landscapes – I really love this painting titled Flowering Landscape which I will leave you with for now:
